Manage business units

Organize the people in your firm into a hierarchy of business units so that each team sees and works on the right accounts.

A business unit is a node — a desk, region, or department — in your firm's team tree. The shape of the tree decides which accounts a team member can reach, so keeping it accurate is how you keep visibility under control.

Prerequisites

  • You are signed in to the Backoffice with a role that grants the Manage business units permission.
  • You have selected the workspace for the firm whose units you want to manage.

Read the business unit tree

Open Business units from the left sidebar. Your firm's units appear as an indented, collapsible tree.

  • The unit at the top of the tree is your firm's single root, marked with a Root badge. Every other unit sits beneath it.
  • Each row shows the unit's name, a badge for its mode, and a count of its members.
  • Use the arrow beside a unit to expand or collapse its children, or the Expand all and Collapse all buttons above the tree to open or close the whole hierarchy at once.

Create a business unit

Every firm has exactly one root unit. The first unit you create becomes that root; after that, new units are always created beneath an existing unit.

  1. Open Business units.
  2. To add a top-level unit when your firm has none yet, click Add business unit. To add a unit beneath an existing one, open the menu on that unit's row and choose Add child.
  3. In the Name field, enter a name your team will recognize, such as Retention — EU.
  4. Under Parent, confirm or change the unit this new one sits under. When your firm already has a root, every unit must sit somewhere beneath it.
  1. Click Create.

The new unit appears in the tree under its parent.

Edit a business unit

  1. Open the menu on the unit's row and choose Edit.
  2. Change the Name or the Parent, then click Save.

Move a business unit

Re-parenting a unit moves it — and every unit beneath it — to a new place in the tree. You can do this two ways:

  • Drag and drop. Drag a unit's row onto the unit that should become its new parent.
  • Move to… menu. Open the menu on the unit's row and pick the new parent from the list.

Warning

A unit cannot be moved into itself or into any unit already beneath it — those drops are rejected so the tree can never fold back on itself.

See a unit's members

Each row in the tree shows a member count — the operator users who belong to that unit. Members are not assigned from this screen: you place a user in a business unit when managing that operator user.

Note

Moving or renaming a unit does not change which accounts its members can reach on its own — reach comes from the permission group assigned to those members. To change what a team can see, update its permission group.
